Tip of the day

The harder you hit your first speed up, the faster it comes back at you. That is the whole problem with going for a winner on ball one.

Pro Roscoe Bellamy plays attacks as combos instead. The first ball creates a weaker, predictable counter, and the second ball does the damage.

Start by attacking the right ball. It should be at least net height, though a little lower is fine if it's further back and you have more margin to get it down.

It should also be a slow or dead dink rather than a fast push, you should be behind it, and you should be at the kitchen line rather than back in midcourt.

Then take pace off. Roscoe hits the first ball at about 60 to 70 percent rather than 100, so he has time to be ready for the counter.

Keep it linear rather than high, so their counter has to come back flat or up instead of down at you. Aim at the wings, down the line to make them extend or crossbody to force a chicken wing, because both produce weaker counters than a ball at their body.

Now use what he calls the rebound effect. Your opponent is reacting from about 14 feet away, so they usually can't redirect the ball, and the counter tends to follow the direction you sent it.

Attack down the line and leave your paddle sitting down the line. Attack crosscourt and leave it crosscourt, with no big swing on the second ball.

Then hunt that second ball, leaning forward to take it as early and as high as possible, and keep hunting if they somehow get one more back.

The live points at the end are where this lands: you can watch Roscoe attack, leave his paddle where he sent the ball, and follow the counter in to put it away.

Key points

  • Hit your first speed up at about 60 to 70 percent so you have time for the counter.

  • Only attack a slow or dead dink when you're behind it and at the kitchen line.

  • Aim down the line or crossbody, because both produce weaker counters than a ball at the body.

  • From about 14 feet away your opponent usually can't redirect the ball, so the counter tends to follow the direction you sent it.

  • Hunt the second ball as early and as high as possible, and keep hunting if one more comes back.
