Tip of the day

One thing decides which dink you should be hitting, and it is not the score or the situation. It is where the ball is when you make contact.

If the ball is out in front of your paddle-side leg, you can roll it. Once it gets outside your body, topspin becomes very difficult and you should be slicing instead.

The topspin roll needs space, so back off the line and let the ball come up to its apex and start falling into your paddle. Off the short hop the ball jumps into the paddle and there is not much you can do with it.

For the feel, press your paddle against the top of the net and brush upwards. You are hitting the bottom half of the ball, and better players brush the bottom outer side of it for a side topspin that kicks away.

Keep the backswing small but keep some rhythm in it. If your roll keeps coming out flat, try finishing on the same side of your body, which stops you getting over the top of the ball.

The slice is the shot for when you are pulled wide or you are simply late. Weight goes on the outside foot, the paddle face opens towards the sky, and you carry the ball over.

Two things ruin it. Chopping down at the ball puts it in the net, and rotating your body side to side instead of pushing out towards your target sends it anywhere.

The backhand slice works the same way with one extra rule, which is to flex your wrist and keep it flexed the whole way through. A straight wrist turns the shot into a karate chop.

Picture a Nike swoosh: down, curve, then up. The up is the part that gives the ball loft and gets it over the net.

There is a bonus dink at the end as well. With an open face and the wrist rolled in, you can come around the outside of the ball and send it back across to the other side of the court instead of feeding the same crosscourt pattern again.

What a written description cannot do is show you where that contact zone actually is. He hits each of these in sequence on camera, so you can see the contact point that makes a roll available and the one that leaves you slicing.

Key points

  • Roll the ball only when contact is in front of your paddle-side leg, and slice it once the ball gets outside your body.

  • Back off the line so the ball reaches its apex, because you cannot roll a ball off the short hop.

  • Press your paddle against the top of the net and brush upwards to feel the topspin motion.

  • Brush the bottom half of the ball, or the bottom outer side of it for side topspin.

  • On the slice, put your weight on the outside foot, open the face, and push out towards your target instead of rotating.
