Tip of the day

This video focuses on the importance of having an offensive two-handed backhand from the left side (the wing) and how to attack opponents based on their positioning at the kitchen line.

The first requirement for modern pickleball is having a two-handed backhand, which Ben Johns recently added to his game to have more offensive weapons from the kitchen line.

When attacking, you must first determine if your opponent is "holding their ground" (staying central) or "sliding" (favoring their backhand side).

Against players who are holding their ground, attack down the line as an investment to make them cover that side, or aim for their "chicken wing" or right hip for a weak reply.

When the opponent is holding their ground, avoid hitting directly at their body or down the middle toward the covering player's forehand.

Against players who are sliding to cover their backhand, the down-the-line speed-up becomes more enticing because they are selling out to cover their backhand.

Avoid hitting directly at the opponent's backhand when they are sliding, as they are fully ready for that shot.

A great aggressive play against a sliding opponent is to hit cross-body, forcing them to counterattack while moving, which often leads to a weak reply.

Key Points:

  • You must have a two-handed backhand to keep up with modern pickleball and create offensive weapons from the kitchen line.

  • Before attacking from the wing, assess if your opponent is "holding their ground" or "sliding."

  • Against a player holding ground, aim down the line or at their chicken wing/right hip.

  • Against a player sliding to cover their backhand, hit the ball cross-body to catch them off balance.

  • Use a quick-fire drill where someone calls out different targets to train deception and execution of these attacking shots.
