Tip of the day
If you play the left side, you usually have the more dominant hand at the kitchen, so your job is to reach and take balls out of the air. Sit back and you will get rolled wide all day.
Find your spot near the middle and treat your movement as a small box: slide back when the ball is in the middle, step over when it is on the line. Clear space early by dropping your outside foot a few inches off the line, then hit through the ball instead of jamming yourself.
Get comfortable dinking out of the air with both a slice and a bump. Taking the ball early cuts your opponent's recovery time, which forces short hops and dead balls you can attack.
Create offense with position, not pace. Run a 50/50 cadence, half wide and half middle, to make your opponent cover everything until they lean and pop one up.
For the topspin dink off the bounce, preparation is everything. Sink into your legs early, get the paddle down, and push through, thinking "wait, then hit" so you do not rush it into a pop-up.
Then combine the two: if you get a dead ball, a mediocre slice, short hop, or low dink, roll it. Anything else, slice it. Mixing your spins, your four target spots, and your shot types is what makes the left side an art form.
