Tip of the Day

Win more points with your return of serve by Tyson McGuffin Pickleball

Tyson McGuffin and Kyle McKenzie explain two return-of-serve techniques: the half-volley return and the bounding return.

Use the half-volley return to reach the kitchen line and establish your position quickly.

For the half-volley return, you need to slide your elbow in front of your body, roll the paddle from below the hand to above the hand using your wrist, and bend the elbow to reach the paddle back up.

Use the bounding return when you have more time and space to prepare for the shot. This technique involves a full backswing and transferring your weight in one motion. It's a more aggressive return that can pressure your opponents, but it requires good timing and control.

  • Half-volley return: slide your elbow in front of your body, roll the paddle from below the hand to above the hand using your wrist, and bend the elbow to reach the paddle back up.

  • Bounding return: take a full backswing, swing through, and transfer your weight from back to forward, all in one motion.

  • Don't move backward when hitting the return. Let your momentum carry you to the kitchen line.

  • Get to the kitchen line every single time after hitting the return.
