Win more speed-ups

Tip of the day

The Pickleball Clinic introduces the "Triangle Pattern," a tactical strategy used by professional players to predict opponent counters and win more speed-up exchanges.

Amateur players often make the mistake of speeding up without intention, simply hitting the ball hard at an opponent's chest and hoping for a mistake.

Pros, however, use court geometry to create predictable angles, allowing them to anticipate the next shot before it is even hit.

The fundamental principle is based on the physics of the paddle: when a ball hits a paddle at an angle, it tends to continue in that same direction.

By speeding up a ball that is to the side of your opponent, you force them into a punch-back that follows a predictable "triangle" path back to you.

Once you hit an angled speed-up, you can immediately "cheat" by loading your paddle on the side where the ball is most likely to return.

This strategy eliminates the need for superhuman reaction times because you are already positioned to handle the counter-attack.

Speeding up straight down the line is less effective because it offers no angle, making the opponent's return much harder to predict.

The wider the angle you create with your speed-up, the more predictably the ball will travel back to the opposite side of your body.

To execute this effectively, look for "dead dinks" that are positioned to the left or right of your opponent rather than directly in front of them.

Key Points:

  • Transition from blind speed-ups to intentional attacks that leverage court geometry and physics.

  • Target an opponent's "chicken wing" or wide shoulder to force a weak, predictable return toward your strong side.

  • Load your paddle on the predicted return side immediately after hitting your speed-up to stay ahead of the rally.

  • Avoid speeding up balls that are directly in front of you, as the counter-attack direction is much harder to anticipate.

  • Focus on dinks that are pulled to the side of your opponent to create the necessary angle for the Triangle Pattern.
