What's a "load step?"
Tip of the day
The load step is one of the most fundamental footwork differences between professional and amateur players.
This move involves shifting your weight to your hitting side before you execute your shot.
To do this actively, you must push off with your non-hitting foot rather than just leaning over.
Getting your weight stacked over your hitting side provides the balance and power needed for a clean strike.
Rotating your lead knee inward during the load helps turn your hips and sets your paddle in the right spot.
If you have very little time, you can hit directly from this loaded position in an open stance.
When you have more space, you can step forward from the load into a closed stance for extra power.
Practicing this setup technique will help you move more effectively toward volleys, dinks, and drives.
Key points
Shift most of your weight to your hitting side for a stable foundation.
Push off with your non-hitting foot to move your weight quickly.
Rotate your lead knee inward to help turn your hips and align the paddle.
Use an open stance for quick dinks where time is limited.
Transition into a closed stance when you have space for extra power.
