Tip of the day
Where you add weight to a paddle decides whether you get hand speed or power, and you cannot have both. Jack Munro sets his up for hands, and the whole build follows from that one decision.
A head light paddle keeps the weight in the handle and the throat, so it swings and recovers faster. The trade is a flimsier face that struggles to hold up against drives and hard counters.
A head heavy paddle does the opposite, opening up the sweet spot and adding power, which is why singles players and drivers favor the four corner tape setup. Balanced sits between the two, and you can find your paddle's balance point by resting it on one finger.
Munro's tape goes on the throat of the paddle, running up to the edge of the logo on both sides. That pulls the sweet spot down and widens it slightly without making the head heavy, so his hand speed survives.
He uses a half gram per inch tape rather than the one gram version, and it is tungsten rather than lead, which brands moved away from because lead is poisonous. Cut the first piece, then use it as a template so the second side matches exactly.
The grip is the other half of the build. He removes the stock grip completely, works a rubber Hesacore sleeve onto the bare handle, and wraps a soft overgrip on top of it.
Wrap the overgrip in the direction your fingers run, which is right to left for a lefty and the reverse for a righty. Overlap as little as possible if you want a thinner handle, then pinch and fold the end at the throat so it finishes flush.
Edge guard tape finishes it, mostly to save the paddle from scuffs when it clips the court. Expect the whole build to take around ten minutes, and keep scissors nearby rather than using your teeth on tungsten tape.
