Tip of the day
The biggest mistake against a banger is trying to slow them down, as this makes your shot much more difficult and gives the banger an advantage.
Instead of resetting, you must adopt a counter-attacking mentality to punish their attacks and force them to try something else.
The first key is maintaining a good ready position with your paddle held above the level of the net, which allows you to swing forward.
Keep your paddle in your vision at all times to ensure a compact swing, since big swings take too much time, add unnecessary pace, and reduce control.
When preparing to counter-attack, keep your elbows tight to your body so you can block and deliver a quick, compact punch back at the ball.
As you swing, make sure you follow through and return the paddle right back to the center of your body to recover to your ready position for the next shot immediately.
Develop a strong mental model of your opponent’s percentages, and try to take away their safest shot, which tends to be through the middle of the court.
You must accept that some low-percentage shots will be hit for winners, but in a percentage game, you only need to win slightly more than 50% of the points.
Key Points:
Avoid trying to slow down a banger; instead, look to counter-attack and punish their aggressive shots.
Keep your paddle above the net in your ready position to enable a forward-swinging counter.
Use compact swings and keep your paddle in your vision at all times to maintain control.
Keep your elbows tight for a quick, compact punch on the counter-attack.
Return your paddle to the center of your body during the follow-through to instantly recover for the next shot.
Take away the banger's safest shot (usually the middle) and force them to hit high-risk shots down the sidelines.
