Tip of the day

Your serve loses points before the rally even starts because you're either tossing inconsistently or swinging with no rhythm. A confident serve comes from a repeatable motion, not power or spin tricks.

Start with your stance. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart with your target-side foot forward. Toss the ball to eye level, not higher, so you can see the contact point clearly and make consistent contact at the peak of the toss.

Your swing should be smooth and controlled, like a pendulum rather than a whip. Many players overswing thinking they need pace, but the serve is about consistency and placement. Contact the ball at the peak of your toss, slightly in front of your body, and direct it to the service box on your opponent's side.

Follow through smoothly toward your target. Your serve doesn't need spin or tricks. Land it in the box consistently, and you're already ahead of players who go for aces and hit errors.

Key points

  • Keep your toss at eye level for consistent contact and predictable serve patterns

  • Position your feet shoulder-width apart with target-side foot forward

  • Contact the ball at the peak of the toss, slightly in front of your body

  • Use a smooth pendulum motion, not a whip, to control pace and direction

  • Prioritize landing the serve in the box over generating power or spin
