Tip of the day

If you aspire to reach the 5.0 level in pickleball, you must master three critical areas of the game.

The first area is creating pressure with topspin at the non-volley zone line, which requires moving off the line with a shuffle step to create space and time.

To hit the topspin dink, drop your paddle head early into a laid-back wrist position and use a slow, straight-up swing to brush the ball.

The second area is developing fast and reliable hand speed at the net, starting with a relaxed ready position with the paddle near your navel, slightly favoring the backhand.

Top-level players use very short counter swings and punches to shut down speed-ups, rather than relying on big power swings.

The third key area is mastering the transition zone, which requires a wide, balanced stance and neutral paddle preparation to defend your body and feet.

When hitting a defensive reset from the transition zone, prioritize forcing an upward contact that makes the ball bounce, which allows you and your partner to advance.

Avoid consistently resetting crosscourt, as it is less consistent and opens up more offensive angles for the opponent.

Key Points:

  • Create pressure with topspin dinks by moving off the line to create space and using a slow, upward swing.

  • Use the topspin dink to mix up middle and wide locations to move opponents around the kitchen.

  • Develop fast hands at the net by maintaining a relaxed, neutral ready position and using short, quick punch counter swings.

  • In a hands battle, sliding to clear space for the backhand counter is an effective tactic, especially on the right side of the court.

  • Master the transition zone by focusing on balance in a wide stance and hitting low, bouncing reset shots to gain time and advance.
