Tip of the day
This video, featuring pro player Jack Munro, explores the effective, yet underutilized, offensive strategy of using off-speed attacks to throw opponents off balance.
An off-speed attack is a change-up, used after you have established a pattern of hitting the ball at full pace.
The shot is most effective when your opponent is expecting a full-speed ball and is positioned on their heels rather than leaning forward on the balls of their feet.
The key to execution is deception: the shot's preparation and motion must look exactly like your full-pace attack.
Instead of decelerating, you should still be accelerating through the shot, but with a slightly softer wrist motion compared to your 100% full-speed flick.
The primary target is down the line against the player in front of you, making it a one-on-one setup shot that should not involve your partner.
Since the off-speed shot has less pace, it dips more and will result in a lower contact point for the opponent, forcing them to hit a difficult shot below net level.
Key Points:
Use the off-speed attack as a change-up after establishing a pattern of full-pace attacks.
The preparation for the off-speed shot must look identical to your full-pace attack to conceal your intent.
You should still accelerate through the shot, but use a softer wrist motion to slow the ball down.
The primary target is a down-the-line attack against the player in front of you.
Since the ball is slower, it will dip more and force the opponent to hit the next shot from below the net level.
