Tip of the day

The USAP has finalized several rule updates that take effect on January 1, 2026.

Officiating for the volley serve is now significantly stricter due to the requirement that all elements must be "clearly" visible.

Referees will now call a fault if they cannot clearly see that the serve is hit below the waist with an upward motion.

The highest point of the paddle head must also be clearly below the wrist during the strike to be considered legal.

While you can still use the paddle to create spin during contact, you are forbidden from spinning the ball with your hand before the serve.

Hitting the ball more than twice is now legal if it happens in one continuous, one-directional forward motion.

A new rule classifies having an extra ball visible to your opponent during a rally as a fault.

Spectators can no longer be consulted by players for line calls, meaning all "in" or "out" decisions must stay on the court.

If a ball hits a permanent object like a net post after bouncing in the correct area, the hitter now wins the point.

Out calls must be made promptly after a ball becomes dead to ensure the game flow remains fair and consistent.

Key Points:

  • Referees will fault volley serves that do not clearly show an upward motion and legal height.

  • Multiple hits are permitted as long as the paddle moves in one continuous forward direction.

  • Visible extra balls on a player's person during a point now result in a fault.

  • Players are strictly prohibited from asking spectators for assistance with line calls.

  • Hitting a permanent object after a valid bounce is now officially a winning shot.
