Tip of the day
Tyson McGuffin explains that the most common mistake players make on the 4th shot (the shot after the 3rd shot drop) is surrendering court control by hitting a safe, weak shot that invites the opponents to the kitchen line.
The purpose of the 4th shot is to put pressure on the servers as they move forward, making it difficult for them to get up and establish.
When facing a floaty or deep 3rd shot drop, your simple change should be a shift in strategy:
If the ball is low or you are overextended: Take a step back to buy time, let the ball sit up to its highest peak, and then aggressively drive the ball off the bounce, aiming for the opponent's feet or high over their head.
If the ball is attackable: Take it out of the air using a Roll Volley, a shot that is aggressive even from a low location.
The Roll Volley is a low-to-high, top spin shot where you aim to get underneath the ball and use friction to make the ball jump off the ground (dance) after it crosses the net.
The shot should use mainly your shoulder (70%) for control and only a small amount of wrist flick (30%) for spin, ensuring the contact point is stable.
The main focus of the 4th shot is to recognize that you are in control of court position and to utilize the roll volley or an aggressive drive to maintain that pressure until the opponents pop a ball up.
Key Points:
Do not surrender court control by hitting a safe 4th shot that invites opponents to the kitchen.
If the 3rd shot drop is low, take a step back, buy time, and aggressively drive the ball off the bounce.
The Roll Volley is an aggressive, low-to-high, top spin shot used to take the ball out of the air from a lower location.
For the Roll Volley, use a 70% shoulder to 30% wrist ratio, maintaining a stable contact point for control.
Maintain aggressive pressure on the opponents' feet until they are forced to pop up a ball.
