Leveling up your return of serve
Tip of the day
This video from SelkirkTV teaches you how to improve your return of serve.
Many players hit their returns too fast, which doesn't give them enough time to get into a good position for the next play.
The video explains that a good return shot involves three steps:
receiving the ball well,
sending it back effectively,
and recovering quickly to get ready for the next shot.
To deal with fast and deep serves, start 3 to 5 feet behind the baseline.
This gives you more time to see where the ball is going and prepare for your return.
If the serve is slower and shorter, you can stand just a foot behind the baseline.
But no matter the serve, keeping a low and athletic stance is key for moving quickly towards the kitchen line.
The video also suggests that hitting your return with more height can help you in two ways:
it gives you more time to move forward,
and it makes it harder for your opponent to hit a strong third shot.
This strategy works well for returns that must be hit from a wide position or when you're off balance.
Key Points
Don't hit your returns too hard; it's important to give yourself time to get into position at the kitchen.
Break down your return into receiving, sending, and recovering.
Start behind the baseline to give yourself time to react to fast and deep serves.
Maintain a low, athletic stance for quick movement towards the kitchen line.
Hitting your return with more height can make it harder for your opponent and give you time to move up.
