Tip of the day

This video demonstrates a specific and effective drill to master the "Transition Zone" (the area between the baseline and the Non-Volley Zone line).

The drill involves one player starting at the kitchen line and one player starting in the Transition Zone.

The player at the kitchen line feeds a semi-aggressive ball to the player in the Transition Zone.

The goal for the receiving player is to hit effective block or half-volley resets to buy time and get to the kitchen.

For higher-level play, the point becomes live only after the Transition Zone player lands two successful resets inside the kitchen.

For lower-level players, the point can become live after just one successful reset.

Since the kitchen player has an inherent advantage, the score is started at 0-3, spotting three points to the Transition Zone player.

This game is played to seven points using rally scoring.

Key Points:

  • The drill focuses on improving play in the difficult Transition Zone.

  • The player at the net feeds a semi-aggressive ball to start the drill.

  • The player in the Transition Zone must hit block or half-volley resets to gain position.

  • Higher-level players must land two resets in the kitchen before the point is live.
