Tip of the day
The number one mistake players make in pickleball is poor shot selection, which can be corrected by treating the game like chess and targeting an opponent's weaknesses.
One common error is getting tunnel vision in fast exchanges; instead of forcing the ball through an aggressive opponent, a player should switch to their partner to reset the rally.
Another mistake is attacking an opponent's strength; players must first assess a competitor's weaknesses (like a poor forehand or lack of reach on a lob) and then target that specific area.
When an opponent hits a bad drop or a ball above the net, players often fail to punish the mistake by hitting a drive or a smash, instead passively starting a dink rally.
Finally, in disadvantageous positions, players mistakenly attack instead of using the kitchen to reset the rally and regain control from a safer position later in the point.
Key Points:
Avoid tunnel vision in speed-ups by switching attacks to the opponent's partner.
Always assess and target a player's weaknesses, avoiding their strengths.
Punish any ball hit above the net with an aggressive shot like a smash or drive.
Use the kitchen line to reset the rally when you are in a bad position to attack.
Take less risk on your serve if your opponent consistently hits back good returns.
