Tanner's answer in this match is a pause. When a ball arrives with no pace on it, he does not send it straight back.

He finds his forehand, sets, and holds the ball an extra beat before he hits it. That hold forces the poacher to stay honest, because leaving early now means giving up the whole sideline.

Once the poacher stops cheating, the opening is there. Tanner holds, goes inside in through the middle, and the ball travels through a gap that did not exist two shots earlier.

The other half of it is where you send the ball. Hitting behind the bigger mover keeps him home, and in mixed that is usually the player trying to cover the most court.

There is a wrong way to do that, and he shows his own. He put a dead ball with no pace behind James, James set his feet, and from there he could fire at whatever he wanted.

So the rule he gives himself is simple. If you go down the line, be aggressive with it, and if you want to take the pace off, go more middle instead.

One more worth stealing. When you are covering the middle and cannot read what is coming, sit your backhand there and clog it rather than guessing forehand or backhand.
