Tip of the day
You're in a crosscourt backhand roll rally at the kitchen, ball after ball. Somewhere in there your hands start asking to speed one up.
The coach in this PlayPickleball.com video says that rally is the setup. Roll crosscourt long enough and you can lull your opponents to sleep, then pull an attack without them noticing.
The test for which two-handed backhand to attack off the bounce is one word: hold. Get low in your stance, and if you can get to a spot where you hold the paddle in a brief pause before you accelerate, that is one you can speed up.
If you can't get there and hold, it's probably not one to speed up.
When you do go, the non-dominant hand does a lot of the work. Think short, quick acceleration, not a big one.
The coach adds a little bit of wrist lag, which a lot of the pros use. It keeps the swing short and quick, with a little whipping motion.
Location is very important on this shot. A lot of players take this shot down the line without much dip, and it gets crushed by their opponent's forehand.
You can go down the line or to the middle. Either way, it all comes down to being able to hold before you accelerate.
Watch for the hold in the video, because the pause is brief and the whip that follows happens faster than a sentence can describe.
