How to hit with more topspin

Tip of the day

Today's video by Austin from Pickleball Playbook is about knowing when and how to use topspin and backspin.

He explains that choosing the right spin can make a big difference in your game, like winning points or avoiding hitting the ball into the net.

Austin teaches us how to hit a topspin dink and a push dink out of the air for both forehand and backhand shots.

He says a good ready position and bending your knees help you reach further into the kitchen to take the ball out of the air.

For topspin, you need to cock your wrist back and brush up on the ball with your forearm, not just your wrist.

For push dinks, it's about making a tiny push towards where you want the ball to go.

Austin also tells us to decide whether to hit topspin or backspin based on the height of the incoming ball.

If it's high, go for topspin to bring the ball down at your opponent's feet. If it's low, a push dink is safer to keep control and avoid mistakes.

Key Points:

  • Choose topspin for high balls to aim at your opponent's feet.

  • Use backspin (push dink) for low balls to control the game.

  • Bend your knees and lean into the kitchen for better reach.

  • For topspin, cock your wrist back and use your forearm to brush up on the ball.

  • For push dinks, use small swings and aim toward your target.
