Tip of the day
Tip of the day
Your overhead smash looks weak because you're hitting it from the wrong position and not using your body's full power. A pro-level smash comes from early court positioning, a high paddle position, and proper weight transfer, not just arm strength.
The key is recognizing the lob early. As soon as you see the ball going up, turn your shoulders sideways and move to position yourself directly under the ball's descent. Your paddle should be held high, with your elbow bent and your paddle face ready to strike.
Transfer your weight from back foot to front foot as you swing. Your contact point should be in front of your body, slightly to the side, not directly overhead. This positioning lets you direct the ball down with authority while keeping it in the court.
After contact, your wrist snap completes the motion and adds pace. Target the center of the court or a corner, depending on your opponent's positioning. Don't overthink it. The smash is one of pickleball's simplest offensive shots when you get the footwork right.
