Fixing offensive errors

Tip of the day
Coach Tony Roig breaks down three common attacking mistakes that prevent players from capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
Attacking balls off the bounce is often ineffective because the ball rarely sits high enough to be hit downward, leading to errors in the net.
When you clear the net on a low bounce attack, the ball frequently travels out of bounds due to the small size of a pickleball court.
Hitting from low to high forces you to hit upward, which allows your opponent to hit downward and take control of the point.
The middle zone of the court is often double-covered by both opponents, making it a difficult area to successfully jam an attack through.
To make a middle attack effective, you must first pull one opponent wide to soften the center and create a genuine opening.
Attacking the opponent who is standing further back gives them more reaction time to defend and counter your shot successfully.
A more effective strategy is to target the player who is closest to the point of attack to overpower their defensive capability.
Reducing the frequency of impulsive attacks and focusing on patient dinking will lead to higher-quality put-away opportunities.
Key Points:
Avoid attacking balls off the bounce and wait for a higher pop-up to hit downward.
Recognize that the ratio of net height to court depth makes low-bounce attacks risky.
Soften the middle zone by pulling an opponent out of position before trying to hit through the center.
Direct your attacks toward the player closest to you to reduce their reaction time.
Use patient dink rallies to create genuine scoring chances rather than forcing low-percentage shots.
