Tip of the day
This video identifies six common mistakes players make with their counterattacks against aggressive opponents.
The counter is a crucial shot, and fixing these errors will give you more powerful and consistent counter volleys.
One common mistake is a downward-facing paddle angle on balls hit above the net, which causes the ball to hit the net.
Another error is contacting the ball too far in front with a straight elbow, reducing power and opening the paddle face upwards.
Players often swing downwards on lower balls, but the correct technique requires a linear swing path, pushing out with the shoulder.
A third key mistake is having the ready position too far forward, which leaves no room for timing or generating power.
The power for the counter must come from the stronger shoulder muscle, not by hinging the shot from the weaker elbow joint.
Finally, avoid falling back when receiving pace; you must keep your weight forward on the balls of your feet to lean into the counter.
Key Points:
Use a slightly open paddle face with a continental grip on balls above the net to ensure your counter clears the net.
Wait for the ball to enter your impact zone—a paddle-and-a-half in front—before contacting to maximize power and stability.
Ensure you use a linear swing path, pushing out toward the target with your shoulder, and avoid swinging downwards.
Keep your ready position closer to your body, using a relaxed arm and elbow, so you can push out to the ball with power.
Generate power from your shoulder, not by hinging the shot from your elbow.
Keep your weight on the balls of your feet and your chest over your knees to lean into the counter and drive the ball with pace.
