Tip of the day

Swinging hard with just your arm feels like power. It actually gives you errors: the ball sails long or sits up, and they attack.

There are three fixes, in order.

Fix one is contact point. Most forehands fall apart because the ball gets beside your hip, and from there you lose leverage, flip at it, and it floats.

Make contact out front, off your front foot. To train it, shadow swing with no ball: set your feet, turn your shoulders, and freeze where you'd hit it, checking the paddle is out front on all 10 reps.

Fix two is the paddle face. Most players hit with an open face tilted back to the sky, and the ball goes high.

At contact, close the face slightly, about 5 degrees, then brush low to high. Those 5 degrees are the difference between a floater and a drive.

Fix three is the follow through. Stopping at the ball or flicking down is a poke, not a drive.

Drive through the ball and finish across your opposite shoulder. Done right, the ball stays low, has pace and moves through the court.

To put all three together, stand 8 feet from any wall, let the ball bounce, and drive it with all three cues. Do 20 reps for three sets, about 5 minutes, and don't worry about power while you get the mechanics right.

The wall tells you what went wrong. Late contact feels jammed, an open face sends it high, and no follow through means no drive.

These are easy to say and harder to feel, because 5 degrees is a small change. The video shows the face going from open to just a touch closed, and the slow motion finish held across the shoulder, which is worth seeing before you try it.

Key points

  • Make contact out front off your front foot, not beside your hip.

  • Close the paddle face about 5 degrees at contact, then brush low to high.

  • Drive through the ball and finish across your opposite shoulder instead of stopping at the ball.

  • Drill it 8 feet from a wall: 20 reps, three sets, all three cues at once.

  • Against the wall, late contact feels jammed and an open face sends the ball high.
