Tip of the day
This video features expert Brooks breaking down his powerful forehand drive, identifying three main components to make your drive more efficient with power and spin.
The foundational element is incorporating the legs by getting low as the ball approaches.
Next, you must focus on clearing your hips by rotating the back hip through, similar to the motion used in a powerful serve.
The most important contact point is out in front of your body, ideally by your front knee, to ensure you hit the ball lower over the net.
Brooks uses a semi-open stance, which allows for effective core rotation and frees up forward momentum during the swing.
The backswing remains compact and short, but the power comes from a quick and aggressive hip rotation.
To maintain control, you should hold the paddle with a loose grip, rating it about a 4 or 5 out of 10.
The follow-through should end high above the shoulder, naturally flowing through the hitting zone to generate momentum.
Key Points:
- Get low and incorporate your legs to generate power for the drive.
- Use a semi-open stance to facilitate a quick, aggressive hip rotation.
- Contact the ball out in front of your body, aligning with your front knee.
- Maintain a loose grip pressure (around 4 or 5 out of 10) to keep your wrist relaxed.
- Focus on keeping your backswing short and compact while allowing the follow-through to finish high.
