Tip of the day

Your backhand slice is failing because you're likely standing flat-footed and closing the paddle face at contact. Most players either grip too tight, which prevents the wrist snap needed for spin, or they swing down instead of through the ball.

The fix starts with your stance. Split your feet with your shoulders turned sideways, and keep your weight forward on your toes before making contact. Your paddle face should be slightly open, not closed, which allows the spin to generate naturally.

At contact, your grip needs to be loose enough to allow wrist action but firm enough to control the ball. Think about brushing up through the ball rather than slicing down on it. Your swing should be smooth and controlled, with the paddle moving through the ball on a diagonal path from low to high.

Key points

  • Stand with feet split and shoulders turned, keeping weight forward into the shot

  • Keep your paddle face slightly open at contact to generate natural topspin

  • Maintain a loose grip that allows wrist action and spin generation

  • Swing through the ball on a diagonal path, brushing up rather than down

  • Practice the motion slowly first, focusing on consistency before adding pace
