Tip of the day
Here's what Richard of Richard Pickleball sees a lot of: a fourth shot comes back above the net, the player swings across, and the ball goes long.
His fix on the forehand is the chariot whip. It's for balls between roughly your waist and shoulders, not overheads.
Start with your paddle around net height and a loose wrist. Lock your core, then turn and snap the wrist, letting your arm finish up above your head rather than across your shoulder.
That upward finish keeps the paddle face closed and still gets the ball in. Normally a closed face would put the ball in the net, but swinging up stops that from happening.
Hitting the top of the ball this way puts a lot of spin on it and brings it down quickly. Your core tightness is where the power comes from, and the arm just whips through.
Why it matters: the more spin, depth and pace you get, the harder it is for your opponents to get into the net. Depth beats pace or spin, so a ball on their feet is worth more than a spinny one that lands short.
On the backhand, the parallel is the slap: turn the paddle face down, turn your shoulders back and throw it like a frisbee. The common mistake is letting the face open, which sails the ball long, so keep it closed the whole length of the shot.
The video runs him through a string of these hit really hard without one going long, and seeing how far up over his head the arm finishes is the part words undersell.
