Easy 3rd shot drop tips!
Tip of the day
Matt from The Pickleball Clinic explains the importance of the third shot drop for players looking to improve from a 3.0 to a 3.5 level (and beyond!).
The third shot drop is a crucial skill that allows players to transition from the baseline to the kitchen line effectively, leveling the playing field against opponents already positioned at the kitchen.
By hitting a successful third shot drop into the kitchen, players can move up to the kitchen line, offering the chance to either go on the offense or neutralize the point.
The video outlines common mistakes made by players, such as hitting the third shot too hard, which can lead to unforced errors or allow opponents to counterattack.
Matt provides three key tips for executing a perfect third shot drop:
minimizing the backswing
bending the knees to get below the ball,
and maintaining a relaxed grip and follow-through.
These techniques ensure the ball hangs in the air longer, is not attackable by opponents, and stays inbounds, significantly increasing the chances of gaining an advantageous position in the game.
Key Points:
Mastering the third shot drop is essential for advancing from a 3.0 to a 3.5 level in pickleball.
Proper execution of the third shot drop allows players to move up to the kitchen line, creating offensive opportunities or neutralizing the point.
Avoid hitting the third shot too hard, as it may lead to errors or give opponents an advantage.
Key techniques include minimizing the backswing, bending the knees for a low base, and maintaining a relaxed grip for a consistent follow-through.
Successfully applying these techniques ensures the ball is not attackable, stays in play, and allows the player to transition to the kitchen line effectively.
