I Taught a 5.9 DUPR Pickleball Player Defensive Drives... Here's What Happened

Every player knows the drive you hit when you are in trouble: off balance, stuck in the transition zone, with balls coming at your feet. Josh J Pickleball calls it the defensive drive, and it has a completely different job from your normal one.

You are not trying to win the point with it. You are trying to stay in the point and give your opponents a look they cannot be aggressive with, so the next ball comes back softer.

That means medium pace with low net clearance, not your hardest swing.

The shot shows up in three spots. After you throw up a defensive lob and get a slightly higher ball back, when your own drive gets countered down at your feet, and when you are stuck at midcourt getting peppered.

The part almost everyone gets wrong comes after contact. Hit the ball and hold your ground, or even take a step back, instead of crashing forward behind it.

Running in turns a shot that bought you time into a shot that costs you time. Staying put gives you the maximum window to read the softer reply and hit a clean drop on the next ball.
