Tip of the day

This video provides essential techniques to incorporate deception into your game, ensuring your opponents are constantly guessing where your next shot is going.

The foundation of deception is always getting to the ball early and setting your feet behind it.

If you are rushed, you cannot execute these techniques effectively.

The primary method at the kitchen line is "holding your dinks," which means keeping your paddle face neutral until the very last second before contact.

This single, neutral preparation allows you to choose between hitting crosscourt or straight ahead, or even speeding up down the line or through the middle.

You can also use the paddle face to trick opponents by aiming at one spot (like the middle) but accelerating your swing at the last minute to hit in a different direction (like down the line).

Another valuable technique is the "body fake," where you move your body in one direction while pushing the paddle and ball in the opposite direction.

For third shot drives, you can disguise the shot by setting up in a closed stance that suggests a middle drive, then quickly hitting the outside of the ball to send it down the line for a surprising winner.

Key Points:

  • Get behind the ball and set your feet before attempting any deceptive shot.

  • Use a neutral paddle face until the last second to keep your options open for crosscourt or down-the-line dinks and speed-ups.

  • Manipulate your paddle face angle to visually signal one target while hitting toward another.

  • Use large, distracting body movements in one direction while hitting the ball in the other to throw off your opponent's timing.

  • Lean your off-foot in a way that suggests a middle drive, but then hit down the line instead to create surprise.
