Tip of the day

You're set at the kitchen line, an aggressive third shot drop comes at you, and somehow you pop it up. They crash in and take a free point, and you're left wondering why the ball you were waiting for felt so hard.

This is one of seven tips in tanner.pickleball's video, and it is the fix for that exact pop-up.

As the ball comes in, cross step with your inside leg to cut it off.

Then set your paddle sideways and cup your wrist toward where you want the ball to go. To send it crosscourt, he just holds the paddle in that position and lets the ball hit off it.

The cupped wrist is what aims the ball. You point the paddle face where you want the ball to go and hold it there, which is how he handles this ball instead of popping it up.

The paddle angle is the part words can't carry: watching how little his paddle does as the ball comes off it shows how small this move really is.

Key points

  • Cross step with your inside leg to cut off an aggressive third shot drop.

  • Set your paddle sideways and cup your wrist toward where you want the ball to go.

  • To go crosscourt, hold the paddle in that position and let the ball hit off it.
