Tip of the day
High-level pickleball requires players to create offense to set themselves and their partner up for winning opportunities.
One highly effective play is the Roll Out Wide and Backhand Flick, which utilizes a manageable dink to hit an offensive shot toward the outside sideline.
After hitting the opponent out wide, you must lean into the middle of the court, knowing they will likely reset the ball back toward the center.
This allows you to be ready with your backhand flick to attack any slightly high ball coming into the middle.
Another successful play for right-handed, left-side players is the Roll to the Inside Foot, aiming a backhand top spin dink at the crosscourt opponent's inside foot.
This offensive dink forces a weak half-volley or reset, typically giving you a "dead dink" back toward the middle that you can control or attack with your forehand.
Both plays are most effective when you first mix in crosscourt dinks to pull the opponent out, creating more space to roll the ball to the target spot.
The most crucial factor for these top spin dinks is ensuring they are actually bouncing to reach maximum potential and prevent the opponent from easily volleying them.
Key Points:
Use the Roll Out Wide to force the opponent off the court, then lean middle to be ready for the expected weak reset.
The Roll to the Inside Foot forces a weak return that allows you to take control of the point with your forehand.
Set up both offensive dinks by using crosscourt dinks first to pull the opponent out of position.
Practice rolling dinks to ensure they bounce on the ground, making them harder for the opponent to handle.
Lean in between dink rolls and set your feet early to be ready to apply offense immediately.
