Tip of the day
This video breaks down the forehand drive into six key steps to help you generate more power and consistency in your shot.
The first step, preparation, involves coiling your body by using your non-dominant hand to actively move the paddle back.
Power comes from the ground up, so you must step into the shot to ensure your weight transfers from your back foot to your front foot.
To generate topspin, the swing path requires dropping the paddle head just below the ball and swinging upwards through the point of contact.
You must utilize a compact and quick acceleration in your swing, as a big, slow motion compromises both control and power.
The ideal contact point for maximum weight transfer should be further out in front of your body, aligning with your front leg.
Finally, allow the paddle to extend forward as far as possible before it naturally comes across your body in the follow-through.
This complete extension will naturally bring your back leg around, helping you avoid spinning out of the shot too early.
Key Points:
Use your non-dominant hand to help coil your body and prepare for the swing.
Step into the ball to transfer your weight and generate power from the ground up.
Swing from low to high to generate topspin on the drive.
Use a compact, quick acceleration in your swing.
Make contact with the ball out in front, in line with your front leg.
Extend the paddle forward fully before it follows through across your body, allowing your back leg to follow through naturally.
