Tip of the day

To be offensive at the kitchen line, you must consistently move your dinks around to make your opponents feel as uncomfortable as possible.

Dinking toward the middle of the court is beneficial because the net is at its lowest point, and it drastically shrinks the attacking angles for your opponents.

Hitting wide dinks, conversely, opens up more court angles, making your court coverage more challenging.

A key offensive tactic is to pull your opponent wide with a dink, and if they respond by pulling the ball crosscourt, you can anticipate and counter-attack.

If you are pulled out of position with a wide dink, your best adjustment is to immediately hit your response dink toward the middle of the court.

This middle dink minimizes the steps needed to get back into covering your court, allowing you to counter the next ball more effectively.

You should choose to use topspin when the ball is sitting in front of you and you are balanced, as this is the more aggressive option.

If you are moving backward or feeling defensive pressure, opt for a slice dink to buy yourself more time for recovery and repositioning.

Key Points:

  • Dinking to the middle is safer because the net is lowest and it reduces your opponent's attacking angles.

  • If pulled out wide, dink back to the middle to minimize recovery steps and regain court coverage.

  • Use aggressive topspin dinks when you are balanced and the ball is in front of you.

  • Use a slice dink for defense when you are off-balance or moving backward to buy time.

  • If your first instinct is to volley but you realize the ball is out of range, quickly switch to a slice or defensive shot to avoid an error.
