Tip of the day

You do not need more power or speed to beat younger, faster players. You need to make them uncomfortable, and it starts with getting balls low at their feet so they are forced to hit up and give you an attackable ball.

Take time away with the volley dink. By taking a dink out of the air instead of letting it bounce, you shorten the time your opponent has to react and pressure them into a mistake.

Create space before you attack. Pull one opponent wide with a dink, then volley dink back where they came from, splitting the team until the middle opens up for your putaway.

Lean on middle dinks, the most underrated shot in doubles. A ball to the middle takes away your opponents' angles, creates confusion over whose ball it is, and jams their inside foot, which is an awkward, hard spot to dink from.

When you feel run over, slow it down to the middle of the court. Resetting to the middle gets you back in the point and forces them to deal with that tough inside-foot dink again.

Key points

  • Get balls low at their feet so they must hit up and hand you an attackable ball.

  • Take a dink out of the air with a volley dink to steal your opponent's reaction time.

  • Pull one player wide, then send them back the other way to open the middle.

  • Middle dinks remove angles, cause confusion, and jam the opponent's inside foot.

  • Reset to the middle when you are getting run over to climb back into the point.
