Tip of the day
One good attack does not end a point anymore. Everybody's hands are quick enough to send that ball back, so the shot that actually wins the point is the one after your attack.
The fix is knowing where the counter is coming before you hit. Each target sends the ball back to a fairly predictable place.
Attack the crosscourt player's chicken wing and you jam them up. A jammed opponent is late, so the ball comes back to you rather than at your partner.
Attack down the line at your opponent's backhand instead and the natural counter comes back through the middle. Hit it, then step in and crash that middle ball with your backhand.
Attacking straight at the body is the exception. You cannot predict that counter, so stay neutral with your weight instead of leaning to your forehand or your backhand.
Off speed attacks work too. Take some pace off a down the line ball and aim at the knees or lower, which is very hard for anyone to redirect.
When you attack from the middle with your forehand, both opponents drift toward the middle to defend it. That opens up an aggressive inside out dink to the backhand, or a hooked ball down the line with side spin on it.
Key points
One attack rarely finishes a point now, so plan the shot that comes after it.
Jamming the crosscourt player's chicken wing forces a late counter that returns to you, not your partner.
A down the line attack to the backhand usually comes back through the middle, so cover it with your backhand.
Attack the body only when you can stay neutral, because that counter is genuinely unpredictable.
Take some pace off a down the line attack and aim at the knees or lower, which is very hard for anyone to redirect.
