Tip of the day
Pro players are never just hitting a shot, they are setting up the next one. Here are five two-shot patterns you can steal.
Drive and drop: from at or behind the baseline, hit a solid drive at about 80 percent to the incoming player, keeping it low. A weak block volley comes back short, and now you move up and drop that easier ball into the kitchen.
Shake and bake: when your partner drives, release forward and crash the middle. You take away the angles, and you also stop opponents from pinning your partner deep, which forces a shorter reply you can attack.
Cross and crash: in a crosscourt dink battle, when your shot makes the opponent reach across their body, press toward the middle and reach in to pick off their next crosscourt dink out of the air.
Inside out: earn a dead dink in the middle, the ball that sits up off a half volley or slice. Now you have every angle, so work the ball wide to set up Ernies and speed-ups.
Attack combos: speed up to a chosen spot, then anticipate the reply and slide to sit on it. Flick into the body and prepare your forehand for the middle, or speed up down the line and load your backhand for the line.
