Tip of the day

Your third shot drop fails because you're either hitting it too hard, not stepping into the shot, or aiming at the wrong part of the court. The drop shot is not about pace, it's about placement and softness.

The do's start with footwork. Step toward your target before you hit. Watch your contact point closely so you know where the ball is leaving your paddle. Brush up slightly on the ball to add backspin, which helps the ball land softly and stops it from bouncing high.

Target the front quarter of the court, specifically the front service box corner nearest your opponent. Land it here, and they're forced to hit up even on your drop.

The don'ts are just as important. Don't take a long backswing. Don't hit hard. Don't aim for the center of the court where it's easy to attack. Don't freeze your feet, and don't try to do too much. A soft drop that lands three to four feet past the net is better than any aggressive shot from the baseline.

Key points

  • Step toward your target and watch your contact point before and during the shot

  • Brush up slightly on the ball to generate backspin and soft landing

  • Target the front service box area to force opponents to hit up

  • Avoid long backswings and hard hitting, which are common drop shot mistakes

  • Practice from different positions on the baseline so the drop becomes automatic
