This video teaches three essential shots—the drop volley, the lob, and the Around the Post (ATP)—that recreational players can use to win easy points and generate offense.

The Drop Volley is played at the Non-Volley Zone line when the opponent is at the baseline, especially after a deep return pushes them back.

For clean execution, players must keep the paddle face open and extremely still, letting the incoming ball's force arc it over the net and land short.

The Lob is effective when opponents are leaning in with their toes right up at the line, as it forces them back to the baseline and into a defensive position.

The execution of the lob should be simple, using larger muscles like the shoulder and legs to vertically lift the ball high over the opponent's head without using the wrist.

The Around the Post (ATP) is an offensive shot used when you have to run outside the sideline to hit the ball.

You must stay low, wait until the last moment, and hit the ball at its lowest possible point to keep the shot trajectory low and difficult to retrieve.

After hitting an ATP, always quickly recover back to the court to cover your sideline in case the opponent defends the shot.

Key Points:

  • Use the drop volley against opponents who are stuck behind the baseline, forcing them to run in and hit defensively.

  • When hitting a drop volley, use a very light grip pressure and minimal paddle movement, watching the ball contact the sweet spot.

  • Use the lob when your opponent is leaning in and taking every ball out of the air.

  • When hitting the lob, lift vertically with your shoulder and legs, aiming for height to put the opponent on defense.

  • Execute the ATP only when both feet carry you outside the sideline.
